General Information

The Rotary Club of Maitland Sunrise

As part of a community service organisation, our club has made a decision to focus it's fund raising activity during 2001 on providing assistance for the physically disabled. Our aim is to make a contribution towards improving their quality of life both locally and also at an international level.

At the local level we have teamed up with the NSW Sports Council for the Disabled for this event. In general they are wishing to promote disabled sports in our region and in particular, wish to raise funds to purchase racing wheelchairs.

Internationally, we have committed ourselves to raise funds towards establishing a Jaipur Foot Camp in Nepal. Every $40 raised will be sufficient to provide one artificial limb for an amputee when matched with a grant from Rotary International.

The objectives are:

To raise money for the physically disabled. (All funds raised will be split equally between the NSW Sports Council for the Disabled and the Jaipur Leg Project) A target of raising a total of $10,000 has been set.

To increase the general awareness of physical disablement in the community at large.

To give the participants a small insight into the challenges faced by those disabled.

To bring the community together.

You, the sponsor

The organising committee recognises the desired outcome of any prospective sponsorship and will be 'tailoring' the publicity to ensure your requirements will be met.

It is a community oriented event with a disabled theme. The publicity will reinforce your involvement in and your commitment to our local community. A 'media team' is being put together and we anticipate significant exposure on Television, on radio and in the press.

A lot of interest was generated in disabled sports by the Paralympics last year. This event should further promote this interest by providing an opportunity for the local community to participate in some of the sports or to observe them live (albeit at a lesser standard!).

Gold sponsorship

(One only at $2,500.)

This level of sponsorship is exclusive and the intention is to provide maximum exposure that would not be possible if there were to be more than one. All the publicity for the event will recognise your involvement as the primary sponsor. A team entry valued at $150 will be included with the gold sponsorship.

Silver sponsorship

(A maximum of ten available at $500 each)

A silver sponsor will be provided with extensive publicity through the media and on the day. Your company name and logo will be displayed at every opportunity.

Games Details

Game 1. (Court 1)

GOALBALL (Usually for players with a vision impairment)

The game is played on a court approximately the size of a volleyball court. The ball has a bell which makes sounds as the game is played. The aim of the game is to roll the ball over the oppositions end line.

All three players in the team will be masked and padded and the court is outlined with tactile lines. Teams use substitutes and the winning team is the one leading at the end of 12 minutes.

Game 2. (Court 2)

SEATED VOLLEYBALL (Usually for players with physical disability)

A game similar to volleyball but all players must have their buttocks on the floor and play from that position.

The court is smaller and the net lower than that used for generic volleyball. The leading team after 12 minutes will be the winner.

There are 6 players in a team and substitutions are allowed.

Game 3. (Court 3)

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

A game played to basketball rules.

The maximum travel without a bounce, shot or pass consists of two rotations of the wheels. To avoid a blocking foul a chair must have it's axle in front of the opposition before turning in front of it. Other minor rules will apply.

The winner is the leading team after 12 minutes.

There are 5 players in a team and substitutions are allowed.

Game 4. (Court 4)

SLALOM IN CHAIRS

Weaving in and out of cones in one direction and straight back to the finish.

Conducted in opposing pairs with a point being allocated for each win.

The winner is the leading team after 12 minutes.

As a separate competition the times of the five fastest team members will be added together for an aggregate time and a prize will be awarded for the fastest team.

Game 5. (Venue to be advised)

BOCCE (Usually for players with a disability)

Similar to bowls where a jack (white ball) is used. The aim is to pitch your bocce ball nearest the jack or to dislodge the oppositions.

Teams will play in pairs with nearest the jack scoring one or more points.

The winner is the leading team after 12 minutes.
